Seed

Today you will be a part of a story that happens over a long time.
Many years will pass in the next few minutes..
In a rainforest a seed falls from an ancient giant tree. You are that
seed. You are the seed. You bounce on the leaves of the forest floor.
Smell the earth. Working your way under the soft soil. You wait in
the dark, moist soil. Not really alive. Not really dead. It rains.
You swell. Your hard shell cracks. A tiny white root grows down into
the dark moisture. A shoot peeps out, searching upwards for warmth
and light. The shoot becomes two tiny leaves. Over months you grow
into a spindly bush in the half-light of the rainforest. You are surrounded
by giants. Trees with huge roots to keep them strong and upright.
But without sunlight you are a dwarf in a forest of giants. Be patient.
Many years pass. One night there is a terrible storm. It is calm on
the forest floor for a dwarf bush. But up in the canopy, the roof
of the rainforest, the violent wind pushes around the tops of the
giants as if they are stalks of grass. And one giant near you is not
strong enough and comes crashing down to the ground with a shudder.
Next morning the storm has passed. The giant which stood beside you
lies there, dead.. There is a brightness you've never seen before.
Sunlight streams down through the gap left by the giant. Feel the
warm sun on your leaves..
Over the next months you grow as you've never grown before. Towards
the light. Towards the warmth. Growing hundreds more leaves. Your
trunk grows fat.
Over years you become a forest giant. Your roots grow deep into the
earth, seeking moisture and sending it up to your leaves, the leaves
which catch energy from the sun and send it down to your roots.
You live for hundreds of years. You watch and listen to the birds
and the animals. Sometimes your leaves whisper to each other. Feel
the seasons come and go. You are ancient. Wise.. One day a seed falls
in the forest...
